All About Invisalign

Posted on February 1, 2022

You likely have heard rumors or mention about Invisalign and its increasing popularity. But what makes it so popular? But what is it really? Could it be a good option for you? Here are some important details about Invisalign that can help you better understand what it is, how it works, and things to consider before committing to this treatment.

What is it?

Invisalign is, essentially, a treatment for shifting teeth into alignment much like braces do, except that instead of metal and bars, the aligners are made of clear plastic that covers the teeth entirely. These “trays”, as they’re called, are made of medical grade plastic that is approved by the FDA and meets all requirements for safe, biomedical use in the mouth. No dangerous plastics are used, and each tray is molded to fit the individual’s mouth specifically. This makes the treatment consistently personalized.

How does it work?

First, an orthodontist will take a 3-D scan of the patient’s mouth, capturing every single detail of the surfaces of your teeth. Using that scan, a model is created of your current teeth, and the desired alignment, and then every phase in between—meaning that a series of models are created showing the process from misaligned to aligned at a safe and effective pace. The clear plastic alignment trays are 3-D printed using those models, and each set of Invisalign trays can be worn by the patient for a designated amount of time (in order, of course) so that the teeth slowly shift and set into their intended positions. Trays should be worn consistently in order to secure the position of the teeth; otherwise, the teeth will shift back into misaligned positions and the treatment will not work.

Remember that there is no time like the present to get started on this treatment—the sooner you begin, the sooner you’ll have the smile you want!
