High-Tech Equipment Your Orthodontist Uses
Posted on October 10, 2022
Fitting and adjustments for your braces and Invisalign are faster, easier, and more accurate than ever before, thanks to the high-tech equipment. These instruments allow your orthodontist to evaluate your teeth and monitor them closely throughout your treatment. You may find that your general dentist uses them, also.
Digital X-Rays
Digital x-rays are superior to film images in several ways. For one, they are faster. You (or your parents) may remember a time when you had to wait several minutes for dental x-ray films to be developed. Digital images are virtually instant.
Digital x-rays also produce clearer and sharper images than film. The orthodontist can get a better picture of your tooth surfaces and the roots. The orthodontist can display these images so you can view them, also. Digital x-rays also use less radiation, and they may cost less.
3D Scanners
The traditional way of creating a 3D model of your teeth, is to take impressions by placing a metal tray of slimy, sticky putty in your mouth. It’s an unpleasant experience, especially for patients with a sensitive gag reflex. While some orthodontists may still do that occasionally, he or she is also likely to use a 3D scanner for the same purpose.
Scanners are more comfortable for the patient, and they yield instant results. The scanning process involves moving a small wand around all surfaces of your teeth. It uses laser technology, rather than radiation. Your orthodontist may scan your teeth periodically to see how your bite is changing.
Intra-oral Cameras
Intra-oral cameras allow the orthodontist to see parts of your teeth and mouth that aren’t visible by just looking. These tiny cameras are installed in a hand-held wand that your orthodontist can point at any part of your mouth and any angle. The images are digital and can be viewed in real-time.
The cameras can also zoom in to magnify specific areas of your tooth. Your orthodontist can evaluate your bite and the progress of your treatment. He or she may also be able to identify any problems that need addressing.
Today, orthodontic treatment is faster and more effective than ever. As technology advances, high-tech dental equipment can assist orthodontists in providing precision treatment. They also provide a more comfortable experience for you.
