Should You Get Braces or Invisalign?
Posted on June 22, 2022
If you’re contemplating orthodontic treatment for your child or yourself, you may have the option to choose between traditional wire braces or Invisalign. Both methods are highly effective in straightening teeth, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Before deciding, you should learn about the pros and cons of each.
Appearance
There’s no question that traditional braces are noticeable. When you smile, everyone will see the brackets, wires, and everything else. Many people embrace the look and dress up their braces by choosing colorful bands and elastics. Clear braces are available, but they cost a bit more.
Some patients are more self-conscious, particularly teens and adults who work in public-facing jobs. They may prefer wearing Invisalign trays, which are made of a type of clear plastic. While they are not exactly invisible, the casual viewer will not notice them.
Comfort
With any orthodontic treatment, you will feel some discomfort after adjustments as the teeth start to shift to their new positions. Braces are adjusted every 4 to 6 weeks, while you will change Invisalign trays after about two weeks. You may feel slightly less soreness with Invisalign as they move the teeth more gradually.
Another concern is mouth sores. Wire braces often rub the inside of the cheeks and lips, causing sore spots. You can also develop canker sores. Because Invisalign trays are smooth, they may be less likely to cause trouble. If the edges are rough, your orthodontist can easily file them down and smooth them out.
Length of Treatment
Since each person’s teeth and bite are different, the length of treatment will vary, but some generalizations can be made. Treatment with wire braces takes on average about 18-24 months. Invisalign can take slightly less time, 12-18 months on average.
With both methods, you will have to wear retainers for some time after treatment–anywhere from a few months to several years. Some orthodontists recommend you wear a retainer forever. However, you can often taper down to wearing it only at night.
Straightening your teeth has many benefits. Not only can you look better and gain more self-confidence, but you will also experience better dental health. You can achieve your goal with either braces or Invisalign. You and your orthodontist can determine what’s best for you.
